Lohri - Bonfire Festival of Punjab

Celebrate the vibrant Punjabi harvest festival of Lohri with bonfires, folk music, traditional dances, and festive delicacies across UK community centers.

Festival Significance

Lohri marks the end of winter and celebrates the winter solstice. It is a thanksgiving festival for the new harvest season, particularly celebrated by Punjabi and North Indian communities.

Celebration Highlights

  • Bonfire Ceremony: Traditional lighting of the sacred bonfire with prayers and offerings
  • Bhangra & Gidda: Energetic Punjabi folk dances around the bonfire
  • Traditional Songs: Singing of traditional Lohri songs and folk music
  • Til & Jaggery: Distribution of traditional sesame sweets, peanuts, and popcorn
  • Community Feast: Authentic Punjabi dinner featuring makki di roti and sarson da saag

Event Program

  • 5:00 PM: Community gathering and welcome
  • 5:30 PM: Bonfire lighting ceremony with prayers
  • 6:00 PM: Traditional offerings to the sacred fire
  • 6:30 PM: Bhangra and Gidda performances
  • 7:30 PM: Punjabi folk music concert

Dress Code: Traditional Punjabi attire encouraged (Phulkari suits, turbans, kurta pajamas)
