Makar Sankranti / Pongal - Harvest Thanksgiving

Celebrate the auspicious transition of the Sun into Capricorn with traditional Pongal cooking, kite flying, and harvest festivities across Hindu temples and community halls.

Festival Significance

Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of the sun's northward journey (Uttarayan) and is celebrated as a harvest festival across India with different names - Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Lohri in Punjab, and Bihu in Assam.

  • Pongal Cooking: Traditional preparation of sweet Pongal in clay pots
  • Kite Flying: Colorful kite festival symbolizing reaching new heights
